Contexte. La plate-forme numérique CorTexT combine plusieurs compétences scientifiques et techniques: le traitement du langage naturel, l’extraction d’information, la gestion des connaissances, l’analyse des réseaux complexes, la scientométrie, la conception de solution informatique de traitement de données. Outils et logiciels, conçus et développés au sein de la plate?forme, sont mis à la disposition des chercheurs via un service Web. La plateforme CorTexT a développé un projet phare avec CorTexT Manager pour répondre à certains besoins de chercheurs menant des études empiriques dans les domaines des études sociales de la science. CorTexT Manager est un instrument pour conduire ces études et son usage nécessite au départ un appui méthodologique, de construction de jeux de données et d’analyse avec des fonctionnalités de visualisation des données.

Invitation. La plateforme Cortext vous a retenue pour participer à la Formation?Atelier le 13-14-15 Février 2018 (début à 10:00 et fin à 18:00 chaque jour ; repas fournis sur place). Cette Formation?Atelier sera l’occasion de tester la nouvelle version de l’interface de CorTexT Manager, qui outre un Design différent contient une fonctionnalité de travail collaboratif.

Objectif de la Formation­Atelier. La nouvelle interface CorTexT Manager V2 offre un large éventail d’outils et de méthodes: Statistique / analyse exploratoire de données, outils d’analyse textuels, la Cartographie scientométrique, la cartographie hétérogène et l’analyse structurale des réseaux, l’analyse des séries temporelles. La plate?forme vous propose ainsi : de découvrir et de vous familiariser avec certains des modules de collecte et d’analyse de données hétérogènes issues de sources variées, et de les mettre en œuvre sur des jeux de données qui sont les vôtres ou qui vous seront apportés.

Pré-requis. Pour la réussite de cette opération, il est nécessaire de réunir un nombre limité de participants (maximum une quinzaine), aussi, en fonction des engagements à participer la Plateforme CorText donnera la priorité aux chercheurs qui n’ont pas déjà pu bénéficier formation. Bien entendu cette initiative sera renouvelée. Il est demandé aux participants de venir avec une courte présentation de leur projet ou de leurs intentions et éventuellement un sujet à traiter avec possiblement un jeu de données.

La Collecte des données

. Présentation des sources de données, leurs interfaces et les options

. Stratégies de recherche de données et de délinéation de corpus

. L’extraction des données, formats de données, transformation de données.

L’analyse des données

. Exploration de données en utilisant un module de statistiques descriptives. Description des séries temporelles, leur définition et leur utilisation.

. Analyse des données textuelles. Champs textuels dans les sources de données. Principes et étapes de base de l’extraction de termes. Indexation automatisée de données textuelles, lemmatisation et le filtrage statistique.

La Visualisation de graphes

. Cartographie des réseaux hétérogènes. Dynamique des réseaux socio?sémantiques. Description méso-scopique de données, clusterisation et détection des communautés.

EU-SPRI Winter School on Geography of Innovation

The EU-SPRI Winter School is targeted at state-of-the art training for PhD candidates and is organized by CIRCLE/Lund University from March 5-9, 2018.

Abstract: Regional competitiveness and regional inequalities are major themes in the policy debate and often presented as two sides of a coin. Knowledge-based activities and innovation drive the economy in core areas, while the periphery lags behind. This dichotomy ignores the variegated nature of innovation and the linkages between places, the core and periphery, the north and the south. The EU-SPRI Winter School in Lund on Geography of Innovation will provide a more nuanced picture. This will help school participants to study innovation in different geographic contexts, recognize the linkages between local and global innovation processes, understand how innovation contributes to structural change, and comprehend policy implications.

Our theme – TRANSnational STS – encourages presentations, panels, and other events that deepen and extend the transnational character of the Society itself, while engaging issues invoked by both the TRANS prefix (across, beyond, to change thoroughly), and by the problematic and evolving status of ‘nations’ in processes of global ordering.

Over one hundred open panels have been accepted from scholars on every continent and covering every major STS theme. Please consider contributing to what is certain to be a rich and diverse regional conference – by submitting, by adding to our collection of translations of the conference (currently 18 languages) or by contributing to the bloghighlighting our two plenary themes, Indigenous STS and Querying STS Geneaologies.

[Publication] Special Issue of Minerva on « Expertise, Regulatory Science and the Evaluation of Technology and Risk » edited by David Demortain

Regulating technologies, innovations and risks is an activity that, as much as scientific research needs proofs and evidence. It is the site of development of a distinct kind of science, regulatory science. This special issue addresses the question of the standards of knowledge governing how we test, assess and monitor technologies and their effects. This topic is relevant and timely in the light of problematics of regulation of innovation, regulatory failure and capture. Given the enormous decisions and stakes regulatory science commends, it becomes crucial to ask where its standards come from and gain credibility, but also what valuations of technology and appreciations of their risks or benefits do they embed, and who controls them? This special issue contains four papers that look at the construction of regulatory science or, in the terminology adopted here, the authorization and standardization of regulatory knowledge, particularly the role of networks of scientific experts therein.

2018 Call for IFRIS post-doctoral positions

Seven (7) post-doctoral positions are available at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Society.

IFRIS welcomes science, technology and society scholars in all social science disciplines: history, sociology, political sciences, anthropology, economics, management sciences or law.

STS is understood in a broad sense of issues related to the production and use of science and technologies in societies. The post-doc candidates should propose original research projects on specific issues that relate to public health, biomedicine, agricultural sciences, food security, climate change, biodiversity, environmental questions, ICT, “big data” and internet, historical and social construction of technologies, risk and regulation, development and research policies, global distribution of knowledge, intellectual and property rights and global commons, circulation of knowledge, construction of public research policies, multilevel governance of science and technology, knowledge and local development, regimes of regulations and production of sciences and innovation in society.

See the list of projects funded by IFRIS to date for your information.

Selected candidates will be attached to one of the following IFRIS research units (name and acronym are followed by the scientific organisation to which the unit is attached). See the website links for more details on these units.

Candidates do not need to have previous knowledge of these research groups.Nonetheless, it might be useful for them to consult their websites or take contacts that might help them designing their research project. Contacts can be made through the IFRIS Secretariatrust[at]ifris.org

Selected candidates are eligible for a 24-month contract, under the French standard in relation to salary and work status. Contracts will start as soon as possible after selection, according to candidates’ previous obligations and engagements, and on January 1st, 2019 at the latest.

Requirements

To be eligible, post-doc candidates should hold a Ph.D. or doctoral degree as on the date of December 15th, 2018 at the latest and should have already fulfilled all the obligations for the acquisition of their Ph.D. or doctoral degree.

In case the candidate do not have their degree by the date of this submission, he/she should present a reference letter from their doctoral supervisor certifying that he/she will hold his/her Ph.D. or doctoral degree as on the date of December 15th, 2018 at the latest.

If an applicant is selected but does not meet the deadline – December 15th – to obtain his/her PhD, he/she will loose the benefit of his/her selection.

Candidates cannot apply for a post-doc position within a research group where they have prepared their doctoral research work.

Applications

Candidates should fill out the online form by clicking on the following link and send their research proposals by February 5th, 2018, consisting of:

  • A cover letter written by the candidate to indicate the way she/he believes her/ his project contributes to IFRIS research agenda. The candidate should indicate her/his former relations to IFRIS research units, in case they exist. Candidates are not requested to indicate in which IFRIS research unit they would like to be hosted, but nevertheless can do so.
  • A one page Curriculum Vitae. The Vitae should indicate diplomas, trajectory, places and institutions where the candidate has worked and studied. Previous post-docs should be indicated in case there has been any.
  • A research project (no more than 8 pages). The project should be written in English, including a plan of activities for the whole 24-month period and a tentative budget. The project should clearly state its objective, methodology, theoretical position, type and mode of collection of empirical material, research strategy, and expected outcomes. It should also indicate the type of expected production out of this period of time (workshops, book, articles, or any other envisioned material).
  • A complete list of publications.
  • In case the candidate do not have their degree by the date of this submission, he/she should present a reference letter from their doctoral supervisor certifying that he/she will hold his/her Ph.D. or doctoral degree as on the date of December 15th, 2018 at the latest. For the French candidates, their viva report is also required (“rapport de soutenance”).

  • Relevance in relation to IFRIS agenda
  • Potential of the topic to favour the integration of the candidate to the hosting research group
  • Quality of the candidate’s academic and research trajectory

How to Foster Innovative Entrepreneurship? Trends, Challenges, and Policy Implications

 

 

Scholars and policy makers have devoted growing attention to innovative entrepreneurship, i.e. the development of new products/services or new methods to produce/deliver existing goods at a lower cost (Baumol et al., 2007). Academics have centered their investigation on the entrepreneur? and firm?level characteristics that facilitate the identification and exploitation of innovative business ideas (Zahra and Wright, 2011; Autio et al., 2014), whereas policy circles (e.g., OECD, European Commission) have focused on the role of innovative entrepreneurship in favoring new jobs creation and economic growth.

Despite these efforts, there is still a rather poor understanding of innovative entrepreneurship along several dimensions. First, the definition of innovative entrepreneurship is still quite fuzzy (Low & Isserman, 2015). Second, extant literature lacks widely accepted measures of innovative entrepreneurship. As a consequence, current works provide incoherent figures on the size of the phenomenon: the share of innovative ventures on the overall number of new venture ranges from less than 10% to about 50%, depending on the measure used. Finally, there is a compelling need for research about the determinants, the outcomes, and the economic impact of innovative entrepreneurial ventures.

Moving from these premises, the idea and scope of this two?days conference is to bring together the ongoing research and policy debate on innovative entrepreneurship. Discussions will provide an overview of the trends, challenges, and policy implications with the aim of improving our understanding of this complex phenomenon. Paper presentations will be enriched by keynote speeches of leading scholars in the field.

Some broad topics that might be addressed in papers submitted to the conference include:

  • Identification and exploitation of innovative business opportunities
  • The role of technology in the creation of innovative entrepreneurial ventures
  • The role of knowledge and human capital in fostering innovative entrepreneurship
  • The sources of finance for innovative ventures
  • The organization of innovative entrepreneurship
  • Behavioral aspects of innovative entrepreneurship
  • The role of universities to stimulate the creation and development of innovative entrepreneurship
  • Multi-level policies to promote innovative entrepreneurship
  • Innovative entrepreneurship driven by societal challenges

Keynote Speaker: David Hsu (Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania)


David Hsu is the Richard A. Sapp Professor and a Professor of Management at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Stanford University with undergraduate majors in economics and political science. He received his master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University, followed by his Ph.D. in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Hsu’s research interests are in entrepreneurial innovation and management.

Within that domain, he has investigated topics such as intellectual property management, start-up innovation, technology commercialization strategy, and venture capital. His research has appeared in leading journals such as Management Science, Journal of Finance, Strategic Management Journal, and Research Policy. He is past department and associate editor of Management Science, and current associate editor of the Strategic Management Journal. In 2008, Hsu was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Industry Studies Fellowship.

 

Target audience


The conference aims at involving a selected group of scholars. The participation from scholars at the Assistant Professor level, at the post?doc level, or at early stages of their career is particularly encouraged. PhD candidates at the final stage of their dissertation are also encouraged to attend.

 

Submissions and selection


Participants are invited to submit a full paper or an extended abstract and their CV. Full papers should be no longer than 30 pages, including figures and tables. Extended abstracts should be no longer than 3,000 words and clearly specify the objective of the study, its approach and results. The CV should indicate the PhD dissertation topic for PhD students and the main research projects for research assistants and post?doctoral researchers. Full papers/extended abstracts and CVs should be submitted by email to the following address  entrepreneurship-workshop-dig@polimi.it as PDF files.

Participants will be selected basing upon the quality of the submitted paper/extended abstract, the coherence with the conference theme, and their CV. Once acceptance will be notified, participants should confirm their participation and send the final version of their full paper.

EU-SPRI members: the conference is free of charge. The organization will cover accommodation for two nights, lunches, conference material and the conference dinner. Accommodation for early career delegates will be provided close to the conference venue in the university accommodation.

Non EU-SPRI members: the conference fee is 200 € (includes conference material and lunches; conference dinner not included). Participants from outside EU-SPRI forum are advised to book their accommodation in Milan.
