Professional Position

  • 1993 to the present: Full-time researcher (with tenure) at IFSTTAR (former INRETS), member of LATTS (Laboratory Technology, Territories and Societies), an interdisciplinary research centre located at Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (FRANCE); from 2001 to 2008, head of the “History, Technology, and Society” team (one of the four research groups of LATTS until its reorganization in 2009).
  • August 2010-July 2011: Visiting Scholar at the School of History, Technology and Society, Georgia Institute of Technology.
  • August 2011-July 2012:  Visiting Scholar at the History Department of University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA).

  • Ph.D. (1993), Economics and Social Sciences, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (France) (with High Honors and a special mention from the jury).
  • MSc (1987), Environmental sciences, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (France)
  • MSc/BSc (1986), Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (Greece) (Five years curriculum) (in the top 3% of his class).

Teaching experience

2003-2011, Associate Professor at Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, course: “History and Philosophy of Science”.

Other professional activities

2001-2008: scientific co-editor of the series “Science, Technology, Society”, edited by the publishing house KATOPTRO in Greece. The series has translated ten books into Greek in the fields of philosophy, history and sociology of science and technology (two of them were (co)translated by the author).

Service to the Field

  • (Currently) Associate Editor, Engineering Studies, an interdisciplinary, international journal devoted to the scholarly study of engineers and engineering (Routledge/TaylorFrancis Group);
  • (Currently) Member of the Editorial Board, Almagest. International journal for the history of scientific ideas, an interdisciplinary journal funded by the European Commission and devoted to the study of history and philosophy of science (Brepols Group).

Main research interests

  • the engineering profession, engineering education and engineering sciences in France and Greece in the 19th and 20th centuries;
  • the development of large urban socio-technical systems in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as water supply networks, storm water drain systems and transport networks;
  • the rationalization process in French industry in the 20th century ;
  • transnational and comparative history of engineers (19th-20th centuries).
