Stéphanie Barral est sociologue de l’économie et chargée de recherches à INRAE. Elle travaille sur les transformations contemporaines des politiques environnementales et agricoles. Son premier ouvrage (« Capitalismes Agraires », Presses de Sciences Po, 2015) analyse la croissance du secteur de l’huile de palme malgré la critique environnementale et sociale. Depuis quelques années, ses recherches sont centrées sur les politiques environnementales fondées sur le marché. A travers les cas des marchés de biodiversité aux USA, marché carbone volontaire en France et marchés du consulting environnemental, elle explore les liens entre science, droit et économie dans la mise en œuvre des politiques environnementales.

Stéphanie Barral is a sociologist at the French National Institute for Agronomic and Environmental Research (INRAE), with expertise in economic and political sociology. Her work focuses on the contemporary transformations of environmental and agricultural policies. Her first book (« Capitalismes Agraires », Presses de Sciences Po, 2015) analyzes the growth of capitalist palm oil plantations in South East Asia despite social and environmental criticism. Her on-going research is driven by the following question: can we solve environmental problems with economic instruments? Related field work is about biodiversity offsets, voluntary carbon markets and payments for environmental services in France and the USA. More particularly she explores trade-offs between scientific knowledge, economic constraints and institutional normativity in the implementation of environmental policies.
