« I explore two wider contexts for understanding the nature of computing and its place in our world: first the development of tools of empire from the late eighteenth century and second deep time of feedback and control in human history. I argue that if we get blinded by the thrill of the new, we lose the ability to discern the nature of the computing enterprise. »
